Missouri S&T Opens the Missouri Protoplex
A New Chapter in S&T Innovation
Missouri University of Science and Technology will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new 117,000 SF Missouri Protoplex, marking a significant step forward for the university and for advanced manufacturing statewide. As the inaugural building in Missouri S&T’s emerging research and innovation campus, the Protoplex represents a long‑term investment in strengthening Missouri’s manufacturing ecosystem and expanding opportunities for students, researchers, and industry partners. The facility is designed to serve as a statewide hub where research, workforce development, and industry collaboration converge to accelerate innovation.
A Facility Designed for Progress
The Missouri Protoplex brings together 40,000 SF of high‑bay manufacturing space and more than 60 industrial‑scale systems, creating an environment equipped for next-generation work in additive manufacturing, advanced metallurgy, aerospace manufacturing, and materials for extreme environments. With over $22 million in secured partnerships, the facility is positioned to help companies across Missouri — particularly small‑ and mid‑sized manufacturers — access capabilities that are often out of reach.
The Protoplex also reflects Missouri S&T’s broader vision for its new innovation campus. Designed with long‑term flexibility in mind, the facility supports evolving technologies, future equipment upgrades, and the integration of cyber‑physical manufacturing systems. It is a space built to adapt, grow, and respond to the rapidly changing needs of the manufacturing sector.

DMA Partnering in Project Delivery
As the civil engineering teaming partner to Mackey Mitchell Architects, DMA supported the development of a site capable of accommodating a complex, technology‑driven facility. Our work included existing conditions documentation, site demolition planning, grading and drainage design, and preparation of site improvement plans for the building, pavements, and surrounding circulation.
Coordination played a central role in the project. DMA worked closely with campus utilities, MoDOT, and design partners to align new infrastructure with existing networks and ensure reliable service to the facility. Grading and drainage plans were developed to meet ADA and S&T accessibility requirements while supporting positive drainage to stormwater features and structures.
During construction, DMA provided ongoing support through review of contractor submittals, responses to RFIs, and on‑site observations. This involvement helped guide the project from early design through final delivery, ensuring that site improvements were executed in alignment with project goals and technical requirements.
Supporting S&T’s Mission
The Missouri Protoplex reflects a shared commitment to advancing manufacturing, education, and economic development across Missouri. DMA is proud to have contributed to a facility that will support innovation, strengthen industry partnerships, and prepare the next generation of manufacturing professionals.
The ribbon‑cutting ceremony will take place Wednesday, April 15 4:00 pm CST, at 1700 White Columns Drive in Rolla, Missouri, followed by a reception and open house.
