James O. Hacking, my former partner, and the co-founder of David Mason + Associates, has passed away.
Jim was integral in the development of the company, helping to recruit some of the talented and dedicated professionals who ultimately became the backbone of our fledgling enterprise. Those of you who knew him well will remember that Jim, a Marine once and always, could be a tough, no-nonsense negotiator in one moment; and in the next, a light-hearted and jovial colleague. For almost 30 years he was a great friend and a great mentor to many on staff at DMA.
Jim was an important advocate for expanding our business to Chicago and for bringing both of my sons Taylor and Spencer into the company. He instinctively understood that building a strong and lasting organization required new horizons and fresh blood. I know that Taylor and Spencer respected Jim’s leadership, his familial embrace, and his ability to provide sensible guidance in business and in personal aspects of their lives.
Naturally, Jim grew to love golf, and spent a lot of time with me entertaining clients on the links, enjoying our ability to do business and develop new strategies surrounded by the beauty of the Missouri countryside. We made a great duo, and I have particularly missed this aspect of our friendship. Today, in his honor, the flag at Boone Valley Golf Course flies at half-staff.
To Cissy, Jim IV, Molly, Kerry their spouses, and Jim’s grandchildren we send heartfelt condolences.
