Comer II Addition Children’s Hospital

This project consisted of a new six-story, 140,000 SF addition to Comer II Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago located in the historic Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago.

David Mason + Associates provided civil engineering services for the project. Our work included planning, design, and construction phase services. Site work design included relocation of existing utilities, new utility service, site layout and geometrics, paving (standard & decorative), grading and drainage, and storm water management. An underground storm water detention system was included.

Construction phasing and traffic control was a major consideration since this project was located within an active, highly-traveled medical district. Maintaining vehicular and pedestrian access and circulation to adjoining facilities around the project site was critical. Additionally, a high-degree of coordination with local utility companies was required to insure uninterrupted service to adjacent facilities.

Our engineers and designers developed a digital terrain model for the project using AutoCAD Civil 3D. The model was used to evaluate multiple grading concepts to achieve a near balance of earthwork on site.
