University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign – Mechanical Engineering Building Addition + Renovation
The Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is one of 12 departments within the University of Illinois College of Engineering. The project included a five-story building addition on the east end of the existing facility, a one-story addition infill of the existing courtyard space, interior renovations, and ramp + stair revisions to the existing building west entry.
David Mason + Associates provided structural engineering services for the additions and renovations to this vintage campus building. Structural additions included a five-story independent structure for classrooms, lecture hall, and mechanical penthouse. A second addition included a courtyard infill to provide additional lecture and classroom space as well as student gathering.
Each addition consisted of a structural steel framed system with composite floor framing. The lateral system was a dual system composed of moment frames and concentric bracing. Renovation to the existing facility also included new mechanical load evaluation, framing for new floor and roof openings while meeting the architectural reprogramming needs.
