Distribution Substation – Breaker/Relay Improvements
David Mason + Associates (DMA) was responsible for replacing breakers and relaying for medium and low voltage circuits. Improvements included replacing existing line and capacitor bank breakers and incorporating them with existing protection and control schemes.
Some projects incorporated new breakers with existing relay and control upgrades and some projects involved a complete replacement of both breakers and relays. DMA provided physical and electrical design along with construction release documentation and support.
Multiple breakers with different applications were replaced. Although the breakers were identical, the installations and protection requirements were different at every location. This made it difficult to realize any efficiencies or cost benefits as the program continued.
All sites were brownfield locations. Although this is a great way to learn about the client and the nuances of standards and preferences, it is certainly more challenging than a new substation installation.
