Transmission Substation – Communication Improvements
David Mason + Associates (DMA) worked as a subconsultant to Burns & McDonnell on a 345kV/138kV substation. Four (4) of the 138kV lines at this substation were improved with communication upgrades using the existing SONET system.
Communication improvements included the installation of new fiber modems and fiber optic cables to the existing backup line relay protection schemes. DMA provided updated drawings, bill of materials, and construction release documentation. The protection and control drawing package included One-Line Diagrams, Three-Line Diagrams, Schematics, and Wiring Diagrams.
The Owner had several ongoing concurrent projects at this substation. There were drawing overlaps between engineering firms on scope, revision, and document control. DMA was required to design a portion of the project without having control of the entire drawing package.
