Distribution Substation – Electrical Metering Upgrades

This program provides design services which increase metering capabilities for clients. Improvements have included different metering devices as well as different points of metering such as Transformers, Medium and Low Voltage Bus, Breakers, Reclosers and Regulators. David Mason + Associates (DMA) conducted site visits for some programs to recommend the best way to proceed and recommend substation improvements. Metering upgrades have also included replacement of RTU and communication equipment to improve remote capabilities. DMA provided physical and electrical design along with construction release documentation and support.

DMA is currently providing this design service to Ameren Illinois on an annual basis. The 2023 program encompassed approximately 150 locations. Verifying field conditions, providing a site-specific design, ordering materials and submitting construction documents in a cost-effective manner are the primary challenges.

Although the design was not complicated, managing progress for several locations with design at different stages was difficult.
